The women of the traditional music group “LAS QUINCEANERAS” are very different from all of the women my senses have ever seen or heard. ELIDIA, BALDOINA, LA CHOLA, JUANITA, and CHAPIN – resilient women, who, with their songs, dances and smiles are facing death, disappearance and uprooting. Their voices build a bridge between soil, sea and universe. Their songs raise the dead as they accompany the spirit on the journey and legacy of their ancestors – a legacy full of magic and knowledge transmitted for generations. This oral tradition is essential for the social fabric of the community but violent civil conflict along with cocaine trafficking is breaking and silencing the people – mostly the women – who are staying behind in the absence and loss of their sons, husbands and fathers. No longer believing in their value, these women have almost stopped singing.
